JOURNEYS BACKYARD BARBEQUE TO SIZZLE IN NASHVILLE
Jun 1 2006 FRANKLIN
Some of nation's hottest new music artists will mix it up with some of the country's best alternative sports athletes as the Journeys Backyard Barbeque Tour hits Nashville from 1 – 8 p.m. June 17 at the Cool Springs Galleria, 1800 Galleria Blvd., Franklin, Tenn.
Serving up a heaping helping of today's top action sports with a side dish of cutting-edge music, this free summer sports and music festival will be grillin' with Nashville's hottest up-and-coming bands competing on the tour's 32 foot-long mobile stage. Alongside the action, top pro skateboard and motocross athletes streak through the sky in action-packed live demo shows in the tour's 60,000 square foot "alternative sport playground" of jumps and ramps.
Freestyle motocross pros will fly and flip nearly three stories over a distance of almost 100 feet, as they run their custom-modified motocross motorcycles through an amazing arsenal of tricks and maneuvers -- including can cans, back flips, and the "kiss of death." Top international superstars appearing at the tour include: X Games Freestyle Moto "Best Trick" gold medalist Chuck Carothers, pro Freestyler and X-Games judge Todd Potter; and rising star/pro Freestyler Jonny Ebenal who wow's the crowds with moves like his "one-handed whip."
Not to be outdone, some of the world's best skateboard pros, including world-famous skateboard legend Tony Hawk will perform the sickest tricks in the sport -- staged on a specially designed extreme course with vert ramps, half-pipes, quarter-pipe ramps, rails and jump boxes. Adio will bring their team of nationally-ranked pro athletes to town for a rare, close-up experience with fans, including athlete autograph sessions after each performance. Athletes slated to appear at this tour stop include skateboard pros: Tony Hawk, Shaun White, Bam Margera, Danny Montoya, Kenny Anderson, Brian Sumner and Steve Nesser.
Alongside the blazin' sports action, the music scene will also be roastin' as local bands compete in the "Converse All-Star Battle of the Bands," with more than $1,000 in cash and prizes awarded to the winning band - - as judged by fans using on-site, interactive voting kiosks. Fans can come away winners as well! After voting, winning fans will be text-messaged or emailed to let them know they've won a prize, including Journeys gift cards and Converse products.
A sweet musical treat will be served after the battle of the bands ends, as headliner acts punk/rock/funk groovers "Family Force 5," takes to the stage from 5:20-6 p.m. and, in a rare free public show, inspirational rockers "Switchfoot" will perform a showcase concert on the Macbeth Music Stage from 7-8 p.m.
Local radio partner 102.9 "The Buzz" will also crank up the heat throughout the afternoon, with a live, on-site broadcast. Before the event, fans can tune in, and check out www.1029thebuzz.com for their chance to win Journeys Backyard BBQ Prize Packs -- featuring tour merchandise and tickets to the Journeys VIP area.
Between catching scorching athlete demos and searing new artists, fans can chill with cool entertainment and free giveaways in the tour's interactive fun zone -- featuring more than 15 sponsor booths. In the Ladies Lounge area, presented by Teen Vogue, girls can get free makeovers and experiment with outrageous hairstyles. Tour presenting sponsor Journeys will have a unique backyard booth where fans can create an artistic message with Sharpie pens that will travel around the country. Fans can also become part of the barbeque themselves -- literally -- at the tour's "Human Sandwich" promotion, where chosen fans who are up for some sloppy fun will be squirted with mustard and mayonnaise and "topped" with shredded lettuce in exchange for free prizes and sports gear.
This free, all-ages tour will leave a smokin' hot trail across the country this June -- from Phoenix, to San Antonio, to Houston, to Nashville, to St. Louis and wrapping up in Philadelphia. Tour sponsor Journeys is, according to Jim Estepa, president and CEO of Genesco Retail and sr. vice president of Genesco, Inc., "excited to put a new twist on a summer tradition by combining heart-pounding action sports with the hottest in new music. We're pleased to join up with our shoe partners and their athletes to offer a clean, positive, free event that represents our consumer's lifestyles."
The event will be held in the Northwest parking lot near Hechts. For updated information, call 615-664-1189 or visit www.JOURNEYSBBQ.com
