ALLARDT GREAT PUMPKIN WEIGH-OFF HOPES FOR RECORD BREAKER
Oct 3 2012 Allardt
Anticipation is building for the 21st Annual Allardt Great Pumpkin Festival and Weigh-off set for Saturday, Oct. 6.
This free event is affiliated with Great Pumpkin Commonwealth as an official weigh-off site. TN Giant Pumpkin Growers organization contributes to more than $3,800 in prize money that will be awarded to the top pumpkin, watermelon, and green squash entries. The weigh-off has broken local and state records in past years for giant pumpkins, as well as watermelons and green squash. Last year, Chris Kent won with a 1058.9 lb. pumpkin.
The event is not all pumpkins. Patrons can enjoy many other activities during the festival. The Annual Pumpkin Run, a 10k, 5k, and 3k run, will begin at 7 a.m. CST.
A variety of attractions for kids and entertainment will be taking place. Musical acts will perform on stage at City Hall beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Pumpkin Festival Parade will be led by Oneida High School Pride of the Tribe Marching Band and will begin at 3 p.m. Entertainment will resume following the parade. Hillis and Binkley, two teens from Van Buren County, will be the grand finale musical act.
“We've tried to keep this event something that the entire family can come and enjoy without having to spend money for admission or parking.” said Thomas Potter, festival chairman.
In addition, car and motorcycle enthusiasts will enjoy the Clyde and Zelia Stephens Memorial Auto Show. Shoppers can find handmade jewelry, quilts, afghans, Christmas decorations, wood crafts, artwork, jewelry, purses, and innumerable other items. And, it wouldn’t be a great festival without great food. From the highly sought pumpkin rolls, fried pies, pumpkin and nut breads, to the usual funnel cakes and homemade goodies, patrons are sure to find something scrumptious.
The event will end with a grand firework display.
