NASHVILLE, TN – June 7, 2019 – Carlyle Wolfe presents “Full Bouquet” for her second solo exhibition July 2-27 at David Lusk Gallery Nashville.
The opening reception will take place 5-8 p.m. July 6.
Wolfe’s practice is devoted to a deeper connection with her natural environment. She has spent most of her life carefully observing the exchange of color and light that occurs in her surroundings and studying the different hues, rhythms and patterns that develop as time passes and seasons change.
Large-scale, densely-layered paintings on panel begin with plant studies made from seasonal observations.
Using abstracted shapes and a range of colors, Wolfe creates mystical, reflective environments. Slight uses of metallic paint recall moments of reflected light while deep blues and greens suggest more plants fading into the shadows. Wolfe’s delicate pencil drawings and watercolors on paper initially seem starkly contrasted to her metal sculpture installations; however, together, they embody nature’s simultaneous grace and strength.
Since 2001, Wolfe has made contour line drawings of plants. From the drawings she isolates silhouette shapes that she then cuts from paper to use as stencils for her oil paintings and works on paper—or cut out of metal to make sculptures.
Wolfe received her BFA in Painting from the University of Mississippi and her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. Her work was recently selected for The Art in Embassies Program at the US Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique. She has exhibited work throughout the South including, The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center, the University of Charleston, the Shaw Center for the Arts, the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, the University of Mississippi Museum, and Arkansas Art Center. She currently lives in Oxford, Mississippi.
