HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. – Lights, music and holiday fun will liven up the 2018 Christmas on Main Nov. 10-Dec. 31 in Savannah, Tennessee.
The City of Savannah will kick off the holiday season with a signature series of downtown events beginning with the annual Junior Auxiliary Holiday Mart Nov. 10-11 at the fairgrounds, holiday open houses throughout the city Nov. 17-18 and the long-running favorite Country Christmas Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at Hardin County High School.
Main street businesses in downtown Savannah will be outlined in starry white lights. Beginning Nov. 30, a canopy of lights will be strung across the Courthouse plaza showcasing performances, a variety of children's activities, and appearances by a variety of holiday characters all providing a family, friendly series of festivities each weekend leading up to Christmas. Christmas on Main will be held on consecutive weekends Nov. 30-Dec. 1, Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15.
Entertainment will commence Nov. 30 when Mayor Bob Shutt turns on the majestic 30-foot Christmas tree at the downtown courthouse plaza. Plans are underway for carolers, cocoa and food vendors each Friday and Saturday night through Dec.15 to join the festivities around the gazebo. There will be appearances by Santa, Mrs. Claus, carolers, and local church, school performers and, new this year, reindeer, 5-8 p.m. each evening. There will be free parking destinations with complimentary trolley service.
The highlight of Christmas on Main is an ice skating rink open each Friday and Saturday night. There will be a small fee for skating that includes a skate rental.
Each Friday and Saturday night will also feature free Christmas performances on the courthouse steps, a hall of trees in the Tennessee River Museum, Santa’s workshop in the Courthouse basement, free Christmas movies in the historic Savannah Theater, with children’s activities, music and lights.
The traditional carriage rides through Savannah’s historic district are free to all and are scheduled for Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14-15.
Christmas in the Park at Pickwick Landing State Park is noon to 9 p.m. Dec. 14 and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 15. Free carriage and wagon rides both nights through the park to view the spectacular lighted displays; Breakfast with Santa is Saturday, Dec. 15; bedtime stories with the elves also take place.
