MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Metal Museum will host Repair Days 2018, an annual fundraiser hosted by the fine art museum where nearly 200 metalsmiths from across the U.S. come to Memphis to make repairs on metal objects brought in by the community, Oct. 18-21 on the Metal Museum Grounds.
All proceeds from repairs, dinner ticket sales and art auction directly benefit the Metal Museum and its mission.
During Repair Days the grounds are dotted with white tents and stations where artists work on a smorgasbord of repair jobs. Volunteers are skilled in antique reproduction, restoration and repair of a variety of metal objects—from kitchenware to family heirlooms, jewelry, sculpture and more. As the smiths are fond of saying, they can “fix anything but cats, cars, and broken hearts.” The Metal Museum, located high on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, acts as a gathering place and a family reunion of sorts for the many artists who have exhibited, apprenticed or volunteered at the historic site over the years.
Each year the Metal Museum selects a featured artist as a Master Metalsmith. This year, the museum is proud to announce Lisa Gralnick as the 2018 Master Metalsmith. Gralnick will be on-site during Repair Days to connect with metalsmiths, talk about her work and celebrate her retrospective exhibition.
Local and non-local visitors are welcome to bring their repair worthy objects on the first two days of the fundraiser. Visitors can enjoy the grounds, watch repairs being made, and view the major exhibition “Master Metalsmith: Lisa Gralnick | Scene of the Crime.”
The festivities culminate in a Family Fun Day Oct. 20 full of games, demonstrations and hands-on activities. The Metal Museum offers free admission to all guests on this day. In the afternoon, witness a team of artists melt metal in an Iron Pour, then stay for the Silent Auction which is free and open to the public.
Lisa Gralnick will be present during Repair Days to answer questions and speak about her work during a gallery talk at 5 p.m. The evening ends with a Dinner + Auction, a ticketed event where all artwork is donated and auctioned for the benefit of the Metal Museum. The Metal Museum is open Sunday for people to pick up repairs.
