OAK RIDGE, TN – March 13, 2019 – The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus led by Music Director Dan Allcott will present a regional premier of Lucas Richman’s “Symphony: This Will Be Our Reply” 7:30 p.m. March 30 in the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 Eroica will conclude the program.
In celebration of the Leonard Bernstein Centenary, Lucas Richman received permission from the Leonard Bernstein Office to create a new work for chorus and orchestra inspired by the speech Maestro Bernstein delivered to the United Jewish Fund two days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Known as “An Artist’s Response to Violence,” the speech addresses the manner in which musicians might best use their abilities in the aftermath of tragedy.
The three movements of Richman’s “Symphony: This Will Be Our Reply” – intensity, beauty, devotion -explore the contrasts of beauty and violence that pervade the world. The work ultimately resolves with an anthem of an original poem which frames the ancient Hebrew text, “L’Takken et Ha’Olam (Repair the World),” uplifting the essence of Bernstein’s message.
A free reception open to the public will be held 4:30 p.m. March 24 at the Beth El Center. Maestro Richman will speak about his inspiration for the composition. Seating is limited and reservations are encouraged by emailing email@example.com or calling 865-483-5569. Additional adult and student activities with the maestro will occur during the week.
