Curtis McPeake, Bluegrass Legend, to Celebrate CD Release, Perform at Music Homecoming in Selmer

SELMER, Tenn. – Curtis McPeake is a five-string banjo trailblazer who will perform as part of Arts in McNairy’s annual Music Homecoming and to celebrate his latest CD release, The Good Things (Outweigh the Bad) 6 p.m. April 6 at the Latta in Selmer. General admission tickets will go on sale March 23.

Lauded as one of the architects of modern bluegrass, McPeake toured and recorded with Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, acted as a regular stand-in for Earl Scruggs in Flatt and Scruggs, and toured with Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass. He was a member of the Grand Ole Opry’s house band for 8 years and worked on more Nashville studio sessions than anyone can recall. At 90 years old he continued making music, collaborating with guitarist Andy May to produce The Good Things (Outweigh the Bad), a 10-track CD to be released March 16 on the Swift River Music label.

The CD is a celebration of McPeake’s outstanding 70-year music career. Listeners will recognize old-time favorites like “Leather Britches,” “Steel Driving Man” and “My Home’s Across the Blueridge.” The southern hymn “Unclouded Day”pays homage to McPeake’s spiritual roots. The original tune “Grandpa’s Mule” by Andy and Lauren May evoke memories of McPeake’s time with Flatt & Scruggs. Aubrey Hanie (fiddle) and Tim Dishman (bass) also perform on the CD.

McPeake, a Scotts Hill, Tennessee native, will be coming home for a rare West Tennessee concert and CD release celebration at Arts in McNairy’s annual Music Homecoming on Friday, April 6 at 6:00 pm at the McNairy County Visitors’ & Cultural Center (The Latta), 205 W. Court Ave., Selmer, Tenn.
