ATHENS, Tenn. – Athens Area Council for the Arts announces “Reflections,” showing work by Cleveland artist and art professor, Mark Mcleod May 22-July 17 at The Arts Center.
The exhibit opening reception is 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, May 25. Mcleod will be on hand to informally discuss his work. The reception includes light refreshments and is free and open to the public.
Mark Mcleod is an associate professor of art at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee. He has taught at Cleveland State for the past eight years. He has arranged numerous on campus exhibitions and residencies and was awarded both the STAR Award for Service and the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2015.
Mcleod’s most recent works of art explore the ever changing and erroneous nature of memory. Memory is a fallible, persistently shifting, exploitable thing. His interest in memory stems from his own inability to store and retrieve some long and most short-term events. He remembers few events from his childhood and very little from his recent past. This deficiency has forced him to rely on secondary storage and retrieval methods. Video has become a backup for incomplete memories and photography has become proof of moments. His life has been subsequently organized into little blue digital folders by year, month, and event. This shortcoming makes him question his limited recollection of the past and what he has come to understand as reality.
