Last season broke records for Broadway attendance and ticket sales and the Tennessee Theatre expects a record-breaking 10th anniversary season.
The 10th anniversary kicks off with “Kinky Boots,” Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit. With songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, “Kinky Boots” takes audiences from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. With direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award®-winner Jerry Mitchell and a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony Award®-winner Harvey Fierstein, “Kinky Boots” is the winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.
The season continues at the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where an intoxicating Emcee, singer Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd – and to leave their troubles outside. “Cabaret” is based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award®-winning production by Director Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall. Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” Leave your troubles outside – life is beautiful at “Cabaret”– John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff’s Tony®-winning musical about following your heart while the world loses its way.
There truly is no place like home as the greatest family musical of all time, the wonderful “Wizard Of Oz,” twists its way into Knoxville. The entire family will be captivated as they travel down the Yellow Brick Road and beyond with Dorothy, Toto and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow in this lavish production, featuring breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography and classic songs. A spectacular celebration of the iconic 1939 MGM film, “The Wizard Of Oz” will blow you away from the moment the tornado touches down and transports you to a dazzling Oz, complete with munchkins and flying monkeys. Don’t miss the chance to travel Over the Rainbow and experience this national treasure on stage.
“Motown: The Musical” is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. “Motown” shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit.
“Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” tells the Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.
The 2017-2018 Season concludes with “The Book of Mormon,” back by popular demand following its record-breaking engagement in 2016. It’s “The Book of Mormon,” the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical. This outrageous musical comedy follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, Australia, on Broadway, and across North America, “The Book of Mormon” has truly become an international sensation. Contains explicit language.
