HERMITAGE, Tenn. (April 26, 2022) - Urban trees and green spaces play a vital role in air quality. The Hermitage is comprised of 1,120 acres of largely green spaces with forested areas interspersed with trees. The Hermitage Arboretum, recently certified by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council, is home to nearly 100 different species of trees, including two Davidson County Champion American Holly Trees, six nearly 200-year-old cedars that line the mansion carriage drive, 19 different species of oak trees and, of course, five different species of hickory for “Old Hickory,” Andrew Jackson’s nickname.
The arboretum will be dedicated with a special ceremony on Monday, May 16, which is National Tree Day. Join us at 10 a.m. for a presentation with Neil Letson, TUFC president; remarks by Howard J. Kittell, president and CEO of the Andrew Jackson Foundation; a tree planting; mini arboretum tours; and more.
When you visit The Hermitage, be sure to download the new arboretum map so that you can find out more information about each tree that is included. Grounds Passes are the perfect way to see the arboretum, giving you full access to the 1,120-acre site.
Rachel’s Garden Fund and a grant from The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee provided funding to establish The Hermitage Arboretum. New guided arboretum tours will launch soon.
