ATHENS, Tenn. – Athens Area Children’s Choir performs its Spring Concert 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at The Arts Center in Athens. The event is free, though a $5 donation is requested. All donations received will fund scholarships or operating expenses for Athens Area Children’s Choir.
Athens Area Children’s Choir headlines its first full concert to present repertoire from the ensemble’s first year singing together. The program includes a diverse collection of choral music, from sacred to secular, from popular American tunes to classic songs from cultures across the world.
The singers are in fourth to eighth grade and from McMinn, Meigs, and Monroe counties. The ensemble includes: Ashleigh Turner, Caroline Ingram, Emily Offutt, George Wilson, Kaydann Bennard, Lauren Luallen, Loren Whidby, Maddie Yates, Natalie Leonesio, Nikki Lawrence, Rachel Willhite, Sumer Jaibat, Walker Combs, and Wesley Graybeal.
Athens Area Children’s Choir is directed by local musician Karen Malone and assisted by Ellen Kimball, Athens Area Children’s Choir Executive Director Emeritus, who also serves as accompanist.
Karen Malone is Music Director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a private piano instructor. She has more than 30 years of experience in music education and holds a BA in Music Education from St. Leo University, a Masters in Music Education from Florida State University, and has completed doctorate coursework at the University of Southern California.
Ellen Kimball is Executive Director Emeritus of Athens Area Children’s Choir and was the accompanist for the original Athens Area Children’s Choir (1997-2007). Kimball has more than 30 years of experience in music and is currently the accompanist for voice students at Tennessee Wesleyan University.
Athens Area Children’s Choir welcomes special guest, David Ledbetter, a local professional musician, who will accompany the ensemble on percussion.
