Make a splash at Discovery Center’s new 'WaterWorks' exhibit

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., May 24, 2022 —Guests at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring will be soaking up the fun at the museum’s new exhibit, WaterWorks, opening May 28.

The museum will host a VIP and media preview on Friday, May 27, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The new exhibit replaces the museum’s previous water table, which had been a prominent feature on the facility’s first floor. The new WaterWorks will feature squirt guns, floating lily pads, mini boats, fishing pond, hydroelectric dam, adjustable aqueducts, vortex ball-drops and launchers, and much more. It is included with admission and free for members.

“Countless children and families from Middle Tennessee and beyond have fond memories of the water table,” said Discovery Center President and CEO Tara MacDougall. “We’re excited to enhance this experience with a brand new exhibit that reflects the unique characteristics of the Murfree Spring wetlands, which adjoins our property. It’s the perfect way to engage children in playing and learning with water – one of the universal joys of childhood.”

Discovery Center’s WaterWorks exhibit was designed to promote not only mathematical and scientific learning, but sensory exploration, language development and social skills.

“Water play allows children to learn with hands-on materials and take in new information through their senses. It helps them explore and interact with each other. New experiences and discovering new things within shared spaces offer a great opportunity for social development,” MacDougall said.

She added that the exhibit helps introduce children to higher-level mathematical concepts like volume, early physics and engineering concepts like motion and flowing water, and environmental science.

“We’re so grateful to the many donors who made this new exhibit possible. Our hope is that it will serve generations to come, creating a space for learning and making memories,” MacDougall added.
