Since 2008, the Tennessee Theatre has presented classic favorites and recent hits in its Broadway at the Tennessee series. This 10th anniversary season of Broadway, featuring six shows and a total of 32 performances from December 2017 to July 2018, includes something for everyone. Last season broke records for Broadway attendance and ticket sales, and the Tennessee Theatre expects a record-breaking 10th anniversary season.
The 10th anniversary kicks off with Kinky Boots, Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit! With songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this musical is about the friendships we discover, and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Kinky Boots is the winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.
The season continues at the Kit Kat Klub, where an Emcee, singer Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd – and to leave their troubles outside. Cabaret is based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award®-winning production by Director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films). Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.”
There truly is no place like home as the greatest family musical of all time, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, twists its way into Knoxville. The entire family will be captivated as they travel down the Yellow Brick Road and beyond with Dorothy, Toto and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow in this lavish production, featuring breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography and classic songs. A spectacular celebration of the iconic 1939 MGM film, THE WIZARD OF OZ will blow you away from the moment the tornado touches down and transports you to a dazzling Oz, complete with munchkins and flying monkeys.
Motown The Musical is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped lives and made people move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs like “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit.
Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.
The 2017-2018 Season concludes with The Book of Mormon, back by popular demand following its record-breaking engagement in 2016. The nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, Australia, on Broadway, and across North America, THE BOOK OF MORMON has truly become an international sensation. The musical contains explicit language.
