“Tennessee’s First Hero: John Sevier” Officially Opens Feb. 13 at the Sevierville Visitor Center

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – A frontiersman, Revolutionary War hero, and politician, John Sevier helped forge America’s expansion westward and gave the city of Sevierville its name. A museum quality exhibit “Tennessee’s First Hero: John Sevier” is on display Feb. 13 through Dec. 31 at the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

The official ribbon cutting event for the exhibit is 3 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Sevierville Visitor Center.

The exhibit features artifacts from Sevier’s life including his walking stick, a briefcase he carried during his days as Governor of Tennessee, a bronze bust, and more. Interesting panels detail his life and exploits, encouraging visitors to consider whether he was a traitor or a hero, and marvel at astounding stories about his life. There is also an opportunity for visitors to snap fun photos of themselves in tri-corn hats, wigs, jabots and cuffs to share on social media.

Last year the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center featured “30: Celebrating Dolly in Bronze,” an exhibit that detailed the story behind Dolly’s famous statue. It was the first such installation and proved successful at helping bring in more visitors to the center – with numbers growing nearly 13 percent in 2017.
