DYERSBURG, Tenn. (May 31, 2022) - Many Dyer County residents have fluttered by the Downtown Forked Deer River Park, Dog Park, and Splash Pad to see a colorful addition to the Farmer’s Market wall facing the play equipment. People of all sizes can enjoy the butterfly wing murals placed on the Farmer’s Market by the 2022 Dyer County Adult Leadership Class. A ribbon cutting will be held on site with the Chamber of Commerce on June 3 at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
The concept of the mural was designed to draw traffic to downtown, as well as highlight the natural aspect of the Monarch Migration Path. Because West Tennessee is on the Monarch Migration path, and the proximity to the Farmer’s Market, the butterfly mural was a perfect fit, according to various 2022 Dyer County Leadership Class members.
Murals have the opportunity to tell the community’s story, create a unique experience, engage citizens, increase foot traffic and tourism, increase appreciation for the arts and increase overall effectiveness of a space. With the completion of the Dog Park and Splash Pad and overall centralized location of the Forked Deer River Park, the Leadership Class devised the plan to bring in tourism, as well as add more natural themes and color to the Downtown area.
Commissioned to complete the mural was Jonathan Futch. Futch has been a resident of Dyer County Since 1990. He shared some about his life as an artist.
“Art is my God giving talent, as a little kid drawing was my thing,” stated Futch. “My talent and art style really started to be noticed when I started painting at the local movie theater. I would paint murals of movies that were about to come out on the windows of the theater. Now I paint window murals all across the area for different businesses and organizations. Since 2017, I’ve traveled to 9 different states and painted 14 murals for a seafood restaurant. In that same year, I started working at Dyersburg Intermediate School. There I got the opportunity to paint murals on the walls for the kids and the teachers to enjoy. I’ve painted for many people and places. It gives me so much joy to see people enjoying them. I thank God for my talent, it is a blessing for me and so many people."
The Dyersburg and Dyer County Chamber of Commerce hosts the Dyer County Leadership program for adults in an effort to introduce existing and future leaders to the vast resources of the community. The class learns how to build relationships and work with a team, all while completing a class project. The learning experience brings to life a diverse team of leaders within each leadership class, each having something to put to the table. Leadership participants also discover their own leadership qualities. - Meryl Campbell, Reporter State Gazette, Dyersburg, TN.
